Senior Citizens and Their Caretakers Can Now Avoid Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) with RxWise™, the First Consumer-Friendly, Portable Medication Safety Checking System

Via Web or USB Flash Drive, RxWise™ Analyzes a Senior Citizen's Prescription, Over-the-Counter and Herbal Medicines together with their Personal Medical History and Reports Potential ADR Risks

Herndon, VA, July 20, 2005 — Iatrogen, LLC, the bioinformatics leader in products and services that enable consumers to use medicines more safely, announced today the launch of RxWise ™, the first personalized, adverse drug reaction (ADR) risk-assessment system contained on a portable USB Flash Drive, or accessible through the Internet.

RxWise evaluates the potential risks for an ADR by analyzing a senior citizen's individual medical history or insurance claims-based information and checking it against medications they are taking. Using sophisticated risk-assessment software, RxWise provides important, personalized information about medications that may cause an adverse reaction. The product covers a broad range of prescription, herbal and over-the-counter drugs.

With pull-down windows, senior citizens or their caretakers can easily record medical information to create a history of specific drugs being taken and medical conditions they have, as well as known drug allergies. Each time new medicines are being considered, they are entered into RxWise, and a summary of relevant advisories regarding potential risks for those medicines will be displayed. If desired, senior citizens or their caretakers can easily forward the advisory via email to their physician or pharmacist.

"Americans over the age of 65 consume more than one-third of all prescription medications, not to mention non-prescription and herbal medications. With many seniors visiting multiple doctors and pharmacists, there is a growing concern that they will take medications that can cause dangerous ADRs," said M. Lee Morse, President and Co-founder of Iatrogen. "As the probability of ADRs increases exponentially with 4 or more medications, there is cause for concern for seniors and their caretakers," he said.

"Our system is the first of its kind, empowering the elderly and their caretakers to take a proactive approach to their own healthcare," said Morse. "Everyone can react differently to the same medication. Our intent with RxWise is not only to educate and encourage a dialogue with healthcare providers, but to offer an affordable solution to the growing problem of drug-related illnesses among the elderly," Morse continued.

Adverse Drug Reactions—A Well Documented Danger

  • ADRs are reportedly linked to the deaths of as many as 100,000 hospitalized patients each year in the U.S.
  • ADRs are the fourth to sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. each year, ahead of pulmonary disease, diabetes, AIDS, pneumonia, accidents and automobile deaths.
  • As many as 4 million people in the U.S. annually experience serious, non-fatal ADRs.
  • There are 350,000 ADRs in nursing homes in the U.S. each year.

RxWise is a solution to the pervasive ADR problem. The RxWise USB Flash Drive is available for $39.95. The RxWise Web version, accessible through the Internet, is available for $24.00. Both can be purchased at www.rxwise.com.

RxWise was developed by the United States' leading ADR avoidance team. More than 20 million patients have been protected by this team's technologies. The design team was a past winner of the Smithsonian Award for best IT in Medicine for its ADR avoidance system. The RxWise team has built and operated ADR avoidance/detection systems for over a dozen U.S. state health systems, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Defense, the Veterans Administration, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and large employer groups including General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Chrysler, Goodyear and the Boeing Company, and many others.
